Sheriff’s vehicles in Alabama adorned with Bible verse

There is a new Bible-inspired decal on the back of Houston County sheriff’s vehicles.

The decal, which quotes Matthew 5:9, reads, “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

Sheriff Donald Valenza, who ordered the new decals, said the quote is meant to represent what the department stands for.

“I’ve always had religious belief, and I feel like that’s kept me alive,” Valenza said. “We’ve used that (quote) with (the special response team) for 15 years. It symbolizes the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.”

Valenza said the decals cost about $1.60 a piece.

“We have strong beliefs,” he said.

He said he hasn’t had any problems yet regarding the decals, though a comment on the department’s Facebook page questioned whether the decal violates the separation of church and state.
