Democratic Senate Candidate Running Against Roy Moore Supports Legalizing Abortion Until Birth

The Democratic candidate who is running against “Ten Commandments Judge” Roy Moore for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions told MSNBC this week that he believes women should be able to obtain abortions up until birth.

Doug Jones was asked by Chuck Todd of “Meet the Press” on Wednesday night where he draws the line when it comes to an abortion.

“What are the limitations that you believe should be in the law when it comes to an abortion?” Todd inquired.

“I am a firm believer that a woman should have the freedom to choose what happens to her own body, and I’m going to stand up for that and I’m going to make sure that continues to happen,” Jones replied.

“I want to make sure that as we go forward, people have access to contraception, [and] they have access to the abortion that they might need—if that’s what they choose to do,” he said.

As Jones did not mention any limitations, Todd interjected with an example to understand whether or not Jones is not opposed to late-term abortions.

“You wouldn’t be in favor of legislation that said ban abortion after 20 weeks, or something like that?” he asked.

“No,” Jones responded. “I’m not in favor of anything that is going to infringe on a woman’s right and her freedom to choose. That’s just the position that I’ve had for many years, [and] it’s the position I continue to have.”

He then quickly mentioned that once a baby is born, however, he would support caring for the child.

“I want to make sure that people understand that once a baby is born, I’m going to be there for that child,” Jones said. “That’s where I become a right-to-lifer.”

Jones’ Republican opponent, Roy Moore, has expressed his opposition to abortion on numerous occasions, outlining that the constitutional right to life begins at conception.

As Alabama Chief Justice, Moore wrote in a concurring opinion in the 2014 case of Ex Parte Hicks, “Because a human life with a full genetic endowment comes into existence at the moment of conception, the self-evident truth that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights encompasses the moment of conception.”

“Legal recognition of the unborn as members of the human family derives ultimately from the laws of nature and nature’s God, who created human life in His image and protected it with the commandment: ‘Thou shall not kill,’” he declared.

Moore also lamented during a debate with his then-opponent Luther Strange on Sept. 21, “Crime, corruption, immorality, abortion, sodomy, sexual perversion sweep our land. When we become one nation under God again, when liberty and justice for all reigns across our land, we will be truly good again.”

According to reports, former Vice President Joe Biden has backed Jones, a former U.S. attorney, and plans to travel to Alabama for a campaign rally on Oct. 3.

The special election to fill Sessions’ seat is scheduled for Dec. 12.
